Breast ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless procedure that allows detection of any changes within the breast at an early stage of development. No special preparation is required, although it is best performed between the 1st and 10th day of the menstrual cycle.

What are the indications for performing a breast ultrasound?

These primarily include:

• the patient being over 30 years old (preventive, once a year),
• cases of breast cancer in the immediate family,

• any lumps or thickening felt during palpation,
• discharge from the nipple,
• long-term use of oral contraceptives.

The patient is asked to remove upper clothing and underwear, then lies on the examination couch. The doctor applies a special gel to the breasts and then moves the ultrasound probe over them – simultaneously, the tissue image is visible on the device screen. The breast ultrasound is accompanied by an examination of the armpits to check whether lymph nodes are enlarged.
