Breast ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is one of the fundamental examinations in the prevention of breast diseases, especially cancers. It should be performed regularly by women over 30 years of age, and earlier by those with a family history of breast cancer. At the Wilmed Medical Clinic in Warsaw, breast ultrasounds are always conducted by doctors specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases, which enhances the accuracy of the examination.

Breast ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless procedure that allows detection of any changes within the breast at an early stage of development. No special preparation is required, although it is best performed between the 1st and 10th day of the menstrual cycle.

What are the indications for performing a breast ultrasound?

These primarily include:

  • the patient being over 30 years old (preventive, once a year),
  • cases of breast cancer in the immediate family,
  • breast pain,
  • any lumps or thickening felt during palpation,
  • discharge from the nipple,
  • long-term use of oral contraceptives.

Breast ultrasound performed at the Wilmed Medical Clinic lasts approximately 20 – 30 minutes and is always preceded by a medical interview. The patient is asked to remove upper clothing and underwear, then lies on the examination couch. The doctor applies a special gel to the breasts and then moves the ultrasound probe over them – simultaneously, the tissue image is visible on the device screen. The breast ultrasound is accompanied by an examination of the armpits to check whether lymph nodes are enlarged.

At the Wilmed Medical Clinic in Warsaw, breast ultrasounds are always performed by an experienced doctor specializing in breast disease treatment, not a radiologist. This increases the precision of the examination and speeds up diagnosis and prompt treatment if necessary. The examination can detect changes as small as about 5 mm and distinguish malignant tumors from cysts or adenomas.

If any concerning changes are detected, specialists at the Wilmed Medical Clinic can immediately perform further diagnostics. This most often involves core needle or mammotome biopsy. The obtained tissue samples are then sent for histopathological examination, which provides definitive confirmation of the diagnosis.
